On November 9th 1965, there was a wide spread power outage that darkened eight states in the North East US, and portions of Ontario and Quebec in eastern Canada - covering an extensive area of approximately 80,000 square miles and affecting around 30 million people. It was a historical event that left a lasting impression on those who experienced it, reminding everyone of the fragility of modern infrastructure and the impact of natural events on daily life.

With no electricity, lights were out everywhere, and candles suddenly became a prized commodity, in great demand by those who wanted to navigate through the darkness. An announcer on a New York radio station that managed to stay on air due to its auxiliary power reported, "An interesting drama is being unfolded on our streets. The price of candles in many stores has doubled, with shelves being emptied quickly. On the other hand, some good-hearted merchants are offering their candles at half-price, or even giving them away to those in need, showcasing the kindness that can emerge in times of crisis.

Some store owners let their concern in the hour of emergency outweigh their desire for personal gain, displaying compassion and understanding for their community's struggles during such a harrowing time. Others, however, took advantage of the situation, capitalizing on the desperation and putting their personal gain ahead of their concern for others, thus reflecting the diverse human responses to challenging circumstances.

The very same circumstances produced both self-seeking opportunists and selfless philanthropists, highlighting the broad spectrum of human behavior. We have millions of situations just like this one today, across various regions and situations around the globe. How would you react???
