Wow! You have got real potential here! This is something rare and often overlooked, a glimpse into what you might achieve if you truly harness what lies within you.

How many times have someone thrown the above phrase at you and you leave the scene feeling very happy with yourself? It’s a great sentiment, but how often do we take the time to actually reflect on it and what it means for our journey ahead?

Just before we jump right into it, do you remember the Dylan Moran quote about potential? "Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You will mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, potential is like your bank balance, you always have a lot less than you think". This invokes a sense of caution but also an understanding of the power we sometimes underestimate within ourselves.

Potential And Its Connection With Science

While you are still digesting that quote, let's look at an analogy from elementary physics. There are two kinds of energy- Potential energy and Kinetic energy. According to science, potential energy is energy at rest. When an object is in its state of rest, work-done is equal to zero. This idea resonates deeply with the way we often find ourselves immobilized by fear or uncertainty, never stepping out of what is comfortable.

Some persons are scared of success and it is quite understandable because fulfilling their potential will cut into their sitting-around (rest) time. But it’s true. Look at those who work their potential like the Cristiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams, Christiane Amanpour, and Kerry Washingtons of this world. Are they happy? No. Who is happy? You! The scared folk watching them, with a bag of popcorn on your potential-filled belly, yelling advice at the best screen divas and athletes in the world. It’s often easier to spectate rather than to participate and put ourselves at risk of failure

With enough said, we can define potential here as everything you can be that you are not yet. So, the next time someone throws that 'compliment' at you, 'wow, you've got potentials here', it is a polite way of letting you know that work-done is equal to zero. It’s vital to recognize this compliment for what it is—a challenge to step up and claim what is truly yours—not just an empty phrase.

For potential energy to yield any result, according to physics, it must first be converted to kinetic energy, which is energy in motion. An energy in motion can work wonders. So, get up and work your potential. It’s like nurturing a seed to grow into a large, fruitful tree. Without action, that seed remains dormant.

Change the people you hang around with. In the law of energy attraction, like attracts like. So, look around and ensure you are not surrounded by people with great potentials that they are not maximizing. Even with the numbers, and intimidating stats, you and your friends don't seem to get any work done. That’s a pointer that you are swimming with whales of potential. Look out for people that are moving. Connect with people that are working their potential because together, you can inspire each other toward greater heights.

Work The Talk

Talk less, do more. Whenever you find yourself always complaining of how better things could have been done by someone else—your soccer club, your government, your organization—without a commensurate action…you have potential-zoned yourself. Progress is equal to zero. So, develop a bias for action. Don’t just talk about goal-setting. Set goals and act on your goals. It’s through action that dreams turn into reality, not through idle discussion.

It Is In Your Hands

Do not believe what people say you can't do. Come to think of it, have you been able to do all the things people say you can do? Why then do you believe you can’t do the things they say you can’t? The decision of what you can or can’t do is ultimately yours. So, squeeze out your potential until there is no more potential left in you. If you don’t do it, no one else will. Every moment is an opportunity and it’s time to seize it.
