Our gratitude is deepened when we remember the price that others have so courageously paid to help obtain the precious gift of freedom. In the United States, one such person whose legacy should be honored and remembered is Richard Stockton.

Stockton was one of the esteemed signers of the declaration of independence. He was not only a prominent lawyer but also a very wealthy landowner who dedicated his life to serving the ideals of liberty and justice. Because he supported the war efforts whole-heartedly, he and his family unfortunately faced the terrible consequences of violence and persecution, being driven from their beloved home. That home, filled with memories, was brutally sacked and burned, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Stockton himself was imprisoned for several years, enduring harsh treatment that took a toll on his health and spirit. Tragically, he died a pauper at the relatively young age of 51. Yet few Americans remember this heroic figure who paid such a high personal price for the noble cause of liberty. His significant sacrifice is largely forgotten by the public. However, before he passed on, he said something profound and poignant, "The reason I am not worried about any of this is because I know exactly where I am going, and I have given my all for the welfare of others."

Thank you for taking a moment to reflect on this inspiring narrative.
