Today marks the end of September, tomorrow begins the exciting and hopeful journey into the beginning of October. I have truly learnt so much this month about the ecosystem of business and the vast realities that lie within it. It has become abundantly clear that turnover is VANITY, while profit reflects true SANITY. Democracy may lead to a slowdown in development, especially when the policies do not adequately support economic uplift owing to conflicts with deeply rooted social traditions and public expectations. There may not always be a robust and direct relationship between development and governance, but in the intricate world of business, it is always wise to consistently harness inter-sectoral linkages and synergies that can unleash potential. I have realized immense value in the insightful left eye principle, a reminder that observation is key. One must never deceive oneself; without demand, you simply do not have a business! It is a fundamental truth that cannot be overstated!

One of the most enlightening things that can show you that you genuinely understand your purpose is if you find yourself able to recognize the slight and often brief INCONSISTENCIES of the universe in relation to your ultimate DESTINY. I know that many experts and informed critics might think I have exposed too much of my inner thoughts, BUT REALLY, if you want to succeed and catch metaphorical fish, you certainly do not throw the net into a bathtub nor do you place pizza on the hook as bait. Like John L. Mason once provocatively asked, 'What good is aim if you never pull the trigger?' One of the fundamental differences that exist between EFFICIENCY AND EFFECTIVENESS is vital; EFFICIENCY means ensuring that everything that needs doing is completed in a timely and professional manner, whereas EFFECTIVENESS refers to the ability to focus solely on those essential tasks that carry enough importance to warrant completion. This distinction is critical in navigating both business and life.

When I had the privilege of being with Chinua Achebe's eldest son Professor Sultan, whose highly anticipated book will soon be released by the reputable Tonniez Publishing Press, I found myself deeply intrigued by his draft and what he has learned from his father. His narratives include extraordinary experiences with global icons such as Nelson Mandela, conversations with leaders like Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and George Bush, as well as his encounters with Osama Bin Laden. Moreover, he shared his vast experiences with our very own President Museveni, which provide insightful perspectives on leadership and governance. This remarkable man has an incredible and irresistible story to tell! Personally, I have learned to cultivate gratitude and to stop watering the weeds in my life, instead choosing to start nurturing the flowers! What intrigued me the most were these poignant words he quoted from Barbara Johnson, 'Love is; slow to suspect but quick to trust, slow to condemn but quick to justify, slow to offend but quick to defend, slow to belittle but quick to appreciate, slow to demand but quick to give, slow to provoke but quick to conciliate, slow to hinder but quick to help and slow to resent but quick to forgive.'

Which brings me to the theme of this month, which is - GROWING TO YOUR LIGHT. Just as plants naturally grow towards the source of light, people too evolve and grow towards enlightenment! Human perception inherently demands such simultaneous contrasts. Indeed, it is obvious that Bad News sells more than Good News, but let us remember that it doesn’t contribute to building a stronger nation. In life, nothing else has the ability to cut a diamond but another diamond. Not everything that is easy is simple. There exists a remarkable difference that we often overlook. It is unfortunate that many times we fool ourselves into believing we have INSTINCTS when in actual sense, it is FEAR that governs us. Until you pass the torch onto the next, you don’t receive the profound illumination of light.

HAPPY NEW MONTH! May this month bring new opportunities and reflections!
