It’s funny how our New Year resolutions always have a fitness or weight loss goal, and as the year ends, we think and wonder where the time went. At some point, each one of us has gone through the struggle of striving to better ourselves, and have had our share of success or failure, trying to find the right balance and motivation to stay on track. Many of us can relate to that initial burst of enthusiasm that fades way too quickly.
I firmly believe that weight loss happens in the head more than it does in the body. Looking at the amazing weight loss journey of various individuals around me I have noticed one significant aspect: when people lose weight they often gain something very valuable in return. They gain DISCIPLINE and self-control. Discipline then becomes an integral part and trait of their personality, and that’s how they manage to successfully stay fit after shedding those extra pounds. It's not just about losing weight, but also about gaining a sense of pride and accomplishment in the process.
You start with a changed mindset and end with a transformed body and a much better lifestyle that supports your goals and ambitions. It’s about creating a new you every day, one choice at a time.
So, why does one person lose weight successfully, while the other fails?
There are several factors that determine the success of your journey towards fitness and well-being.
Person A and Person B both made a resolution to embark on their individual weight loss journeys with enthusiasm and hope. They both recognized the importance of commit to a healthier lifestyle.
Planning
A wanted to start with a solid plan, realizing that it was now or never. He was tired of people making jokes about his weight and found that to be a significant motivation to change. He meticulously made a plan, fixed a few days to initiate changes, and decided on specific times to execute his workouts. He also downloaded a diet chart, meticulously did some grocery planning, stocked up on healthy food, and was all set to start his journey. And yes, he didn’t forget to set the alarm to keep him accountable.
B also wanted to kick off with a solid plan but was left feeling rather puzzled by the overwhelming amount of information available. He sought advice from his friend C, who promised to help him navigate his journey and encouraged B to devise a meticulous plan and actually start working on executing it. B made a plan of his own and took several helpful tips from C along the way. In the end, he had a structured plan, a detailed diet plan, a workout schedule, and felt all set to embark on this new and exciting chapter of his life.
Planning is indeed the first and most important part of doing anything. The truth is, exercise routines and a nutritious, balanced diet program are simply the foundation of healthy choices and lifestyle habits. In order to successfully make something into a lasting habit, you must keep doing it repeatedly and regularly until it feels second nature.
Both A and B managed to create a good plan. Although they followed different paths, they both ended up adhering to somewhat similar plans in structure, demonstrating that despite taking different paths, the outcomes could still align.
Accountability
A continued with the plan and although it was tough, he wasn’t one to give up easily. He needed to show everyone the tangible difference he had made within himself. He was diligently following the diet plan, which was not always easy, but he was committed to it. He did take a few extra minutes lounging in bed every day but made it to the gym regularly, keeping his goals alive.
B was also proceeding along his journey as well. He was following the diet plan he crafted, experiencing perhaps some boredom with it, but was continuously supported by C, who made an effort to join him during workouts. B adhered to his gym routine and kept C updated about his progress at every milestone. C even recommended B to join a gym class for an extra boost, B was initially reluctant but ultimately yielded to the suggestion and joined.
The next step is ‘Accountability’. When you involve supportive individuals in your journey, you are far less likely to give up when faced with challenges. There will be someone there to support you, encourage you, motivate you, remind you of your goals, and encourage you to stay resolute all along the way.
A lacked the crucial aspect of accountability that could have had a significant impact on his journey. But thanks to C, B enjoyed the benefit of solid support. Moreover, by investing his time and effort in joining a regular fitness class, B became more accountable not just to his coach, but also to his gym mates and workout partners.
Motivation:
A was doing fairly well, yet he had to miss the gym a few times due to different challenges life threw at him. It was no big deal though; he remained strong and persistent in his desire to continue. The diet plan was also yielding good results overall, except for those odd days when he had to go out with D for dinners, or in those tempting moments on weekends when he simply didn’t want to cook anything. However, overall, he felt that things were going well. He might reach his target slowly, but his resolve told him he would definitely get there.
B was doing tremendously great as well. He found it hard to miss his gym class no matter the circumstances because he knew his coach would be constantly nagging if he did. On weekends, B and C would partake in cycling or hiking adventures to keep their weekend activity levels up. The diet was sustainable too. Even if he couldn’t face cooking every day, C directed him to a great BBQ place that delivered nutritious meals. They even made it a point to have dinner a few times a week, where they ordered healthy food together, staying accountable to each other.
When you start something new, especially a weight loss struggle, you typically kick off with a lot of enthusiasm and motivation. However, soon enough, you will inevitably face challenges like food cravings and moments of lethargy. These challenges can easily derail your progress if you don’t have solid support around you. Moreover, the attitudes and choices of the people surrounding you can soon start to affect your own choices. Once you pass these preliminary hurdles, things often begin to get easier.
Things are undoubtedly getting tough for both A and B, but the constant support and a sense of accountability keep B motivated, empowering him to pass this difficult stage and continue pushing toward his goals.
Patience & Persistence:
A was feeling increasingly frustrated with the entire process. Could you blame him? He was diligently going to the gym and eating healthy but nothing seemed to be yielding real results. He felt he had managed to lose some pounds, but when he checked, it turned out to be merely 4 pounds. Four pounds in two months, how’s that possible? He had a massive goal to lose 100 lbs. Come on, this felt utterly stupid. The various online plans he followed, and even going to the gym when he was not witnessing any tangible results. It was incredibly disheartening.
B, on the other hand, was feeling a little sad today as well. He had only lost 8 pounds in 2 months, and knew it was a long way to go before reaching his goal. However, he managed to realize that despite the slow progress, he was feeling much better and stronger overall. C and his coach provided positive encouragement during this time. B did some research and found that losing weight in a slow yet persistent manner is often much more beneficial than attempting to shed a large amount of weight all at once.
It is vitally important to set realistic goals for yourself, and it is equally important to avoid the temptation to check the scale too frequently. The ideal weight varies greatly for everyone. Moreover, although we may lose smaller numbers on the scale, our bodies continue to become fitter and sharper, making progress that is not reflected numerically.
Intention & Reason:
A finally threw in the towel! What’s the use of the struggle when there are no visible results! People still called him fat! Despite his extensive efforts, A still finds himself stuck making plans for starting a weight loss journey again, forever hoping for some ‘magic pill’ or a ‘magic diet’ to miraculously solve all his issues.
B, however, had succeeded in developing healthy habits and establishing a lasting healthy lifestyle. His choices and habits are now deeply embedded in his daily life. He stopped obsessing with the numbers on the scale long ago. His overarching goal was simply to be fit and healthy, and indeed he does now feel incredibly fit and healthy.
When you begin your weight loss journey, make sure to do it for the right reasons. When your goal is merely to gain acceptance from others, you are often attempting to remedy your own low self-esteem. Know your true worth, and always make the effort for yourself first. You, your body, and your life all deserve the gift of healthy choices and positive habits.
A was primarily doing it for validation from others, while B was driven by his own health and fitness aspirations. That’s what defined their goals, plans, and what ultimately determined their endurance, longevity and results.
